The Dwelling place

England cricket selections musings

Who goes in the starting line-up for the first Test match of the summer against New Zealand? Only a few names are already written down for me: Duckett, Bethell, Root, Brook, Stokes, and Smith. Then it's down to your luck and form! Opening spot, you're looking at Emilio Gay and Ben McKinney, with a notable mention for Asa Tribe; all should be in and around the squad. To add depth to the squad, James Rew should have a shot to sniff around Harry Brooks' fragile place.

One big mistake from the ashes is the squad selection; they were very forced on sticking with what wasn't working because they didn't have enough options.

Bowling-wise, I really think we retired Jimmy far too early, but never mind. Tongue, Ollie Robinson, then whoevers fit out of Archer, Gus and Carse. I would now make our number one spinner, Ahmed and hedge all bets on him.

Emilio Gay starts alongside Duckett for me, and then it's how the rest of the season unfolded, but one thing is for sure, we need a deep squad and pick on form something they haven't been great at of recent times.

I wrote this a few days ago and now the squad of 15 was announced i wasnt too far away with some of the calls, overall happy with the squad. Really happy with the inclusion of Emilio Gay and James Wq both well deserved and intrigued to see how Matthew fisher and Sonny Baker get on if called upon. Ollie Robinson coming back is a no brainer to me, squad looks a lot more balanced and the bowling attack still asks questions but these games are all about trying to get a new attack sorted.
