No One Wants It… So Who’s Going to Get It?
The England Test head coach job is now on the market. With Ben Stokes having retired, Brendan McCullum shown the door, and only Rob Key remaining from the leadership group, England have the chance to start again.
Key speaks well, but if the other two are gone, I’d move him on too and give whoever comes in a completely clean slate.
If I were making the decisions, Michael Vaughan would be my first appointment. He’s been there, done it—especially in the Ashes—and whenever he speaks about England or county cricket, he makes a lot of sense. He understands what Test cricket demands.
For head coach, Justin Langer would be a fantastic choice if he’d take it. After the way things ended with Australia, perhaps there’d be a part of him that would relish proving a point. His intensity, high standards, and tactical awareness could be exactly what this England side needs.
If Langer isn’t interested, I’d be looking further ahead at Andrew Flintoff. I think he’s doing a brilliant job in coaching, but for me it’s just a little too early. Given another few years, he’d be a very strong candidate.
Another option would be to think differently. David “Bumble” Lloyd could take on a director-style role similar to Rob Key’s, with Vaughan as head coach. It might sound unconventional, but I can see a world where that combination works.
As for the captaincy, Harry Brook has all the qualities to lead under a new coach, but with the demands of white-ball cricket as well, I’m not convinced it’s the right time.
For me, there’s only one candidate: Sam Curran.
I’ve wanted him back in the Test side for a long time. As a genuine all-rounder, he offers balance to the team, leads by example, and has the temperament to captain. It might not be the obvious choice, but I think he’d thrive in the role.
What England need now isn’t another tweak. They need a fresh start, new voices, and a clear direction.
